Description

The Center for Contemporary Printmaking (CCP) announces the opening of COMFORT/(DIS)COMFORT on view from Sunday September 12, 2021 through Sunday October 24, 2021 in the Center’s Grace Ross Shanley Gallery.

The artworks on display are from printmakers and artists from across the United States, from Brooklyn and Philadelphia to St. Louis and Los Angeles. The artists included in the exhibition are: Nathan Catlin, Alexandria Couch, Tom Hück, Mark Rice, Dasha Shishkin, and Elizabeth Jean Younce. CCP is pleased to share these works with our community in Norwalk and will hold an opening reception, free and open to the public, on Sunday, September 12, from 12:00 until 4:00 PM .

While the intention of the exhibition is not to dwell on the specifics of the pandemic, the artwork selected for display attempts to engage the viewer in a challenging or confrontational way emulating this new experience of reconsidering our physicality over these months and the ways we relate to other people. Over the course of the past year and a half populations across the globe have been made to reconsider themselves and their relationship to others while moving through the day-to-day activities of life in ways that had never otherwise been given a second thought.

Individuals suddenly find themselves choosing between remaining within the isolated space of their own homes or going out into the world and newly considering their own physicality in it and that of the people they encounter. A focus on outward presentation has come about, thoughts of personal precautions and newly developed judgement calls on others rock what had been unremarkable, mundane tasks. Split second calculations based on ever-evolving criteria shape new opinions of passersby, and we now measure occupant density within spaces we used to so casually inhabit. Our experience in the world is being reshaped daily by the level of comfort and discomfort we are now viscerally encountering at each step outside the door of our homes.

This exhibition brings together work demonstrating junctions of unease, the inward and outward expressions of emotional responses to our new relationship with people, how we see ourselves and others, and the convoluted attempts to rationalize that which is irrational or otherwise incomprehensible.

The Grace Ross Shanley Gallery is located in the Center for Contemporary Printmaking situated in Mathews Park at 299 West Avenue, Norwalk, Connecticut. It is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 9-5 p.m., and Sundays 12 – 5 p.m. and is handicapped accessible. The Center is closed on Mondays. Admission is free. Please consult the website for details (http://www.contemprints.org).
