The Avon Theatre presents a Night of Noir screening of LAURA, followed by a post-film Q&A with film noir expert Michael Kovner.
At the outset of the film, it is established that the title character, Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney), has been murdered. Tough New York detective Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) investigates the killing, methodically questioning the chief suspects: waspish columnist Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), wastrel socialite Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price), and Carpenter's wealthy "patroness" Ann Treadwell (Judith Anderson).
The deeper he gets into the case, the more fascinated he becomes by the enigmatic Laura, literally falling in love with the girl's painted portrait. Ruminating over the case and his own obsessions, he falls asleep while sitting in Laura’s apartment.
Suddenly he is awakened by the sound of someone entering the apartment – and it appears to be Laura Hunt!
Based on the suspense novel by Vera Caspary, LAURA was directed by Otto Preminger.
The success of this film, both at the box office and with critics, cemented Preminger’s role in Hollywood for the next 40 years. In 1999, LAURA was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. The film was also named one of the ten best mystery films of all time by the American Film Institute.
