There is nothing like leveraging the elevated language and literary elements typically associated with poetry – vivid description, symbolic imagery, rhythm and sound – to connect to your readers. In this one-day workshop we will focus on how to employ the type of lyricism typically identified with poetry to add drama and beauty to their prose projects without sounding overly lofty or sentimental.
We’ll begin by reading some examples of prose writers who employ lyricism strategically to underscore key themes on their work and to connect with readers spiritually and experientially. The bulk of the day will be devoted to generative writing prompts, followed by brainstorming on way the lyrical writing we generate together might be used effectively in various genres and projects, from children’s literature to fiction to memoir.
