Description

– Inspired by the Stamford Museum and Nature Center’s collection of antique Yale and Towne locks and keys, the Loft Artists Association members will showcase an exhibition of work titled “Lock Works” on view in the Phillips and West Galleries at 575 Pacific Street from February 2 to February 24, 2019, with an opening reception on Friday, February 8 from 6-8 pm. “This is a rare opportunity for our artists to work from original artifacts on loan to us from the Stamford Museum and Nature Center. The broad range of talent and diverse and innovative styles of the LAA artists will be highlighted by this very unique inspiration.” Commented LAA Director, Mark Macrides.

Founded in Stamford’s South End in 1868, the Yale and Towne lock manufacturing company was well known for the invention of the pin tumbler lock as well as padlocks and bank vault locks. When the company closed many of the original locks were given to the Stamford Museum and Nature Center. “These locks and keys represent a significant part of Stamford’s history as well as the history of the Loft Artists Association, which occupied the vacant Yale and Towne building with artist studios for many years” stated Macrides, “The LAA is excited to have the opportunity to create works of art inspired by these magnificent artifacts with their very relevant and interesting historical context. We’re grateful to the museum’s Curator of Exhibits and Collections, Jillian Casey for making this possible.”

A portion of the Stamford Museum’s Yale and Towne lock and key collection will be on view at the opening reception Friday, February 8 from 6-8 PM.

This show marks the fifth collaborative event between LAA and SM&NC, free to the public. “Lock Works” is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4:30 pm. Admission and parking are free. Handicapped access is available by appointment only. For directions and more information visit loftartists.org.
