New England stone walls are the signature landform of rural New England. The vast majority are artifacts of a vanished agricultural civilization that are freighted with stories that can be interpreted. During his presentation, Professor Thorson will provide an overview of the subject with an emphasis on their symbolism, and will end with suggestions for conservation. Following the 30 minute presentation, there will be plenty of time for Q&A.

Robert M. Thorson is a STEM physical scientist and head of UConn’s Department of Geoscience. He is an expert on New England environmental history via stone walls and Henry David Thoreau. He has written seven books since 1998, including “Stone by Stone: The Magnificent History of New England’s Stone Walls” and “Exploring Stone Walls: A Field Guide to New England’s Stone Walls”. Dr. Thorson has taken part in thousands of presentations, trips, consulting jobs and trainings over the years. He is also a retired journalist, writing for 15 years for the Hartford Courant. Dr. Thorson is an elected fellow of the Geological Society of America and an elected member of the American Antiquarian Association.
