In this course students paint together in real time in a comfortable online learning environment instructed and guided by Leeanna Chipana. Students work from their own photographs of the human portrait or they work from images displayed on screen during Zoom sessions. Classical and "old master" methods will be broken down into easy to grasp concepts. Students begin with learning how to understand the human head as "planes" and are introduced to concepts in observation and measuring. Then students paint simplified flesh tone "poster" studies also known as "alla prima" painting. Students then learn how to accurately render a head with proper measurements and are introduced to basic anatomy of the skull and facial muscles. At the beginning of each session, instructor critiques work and provides a lecture or talk on concepts like structural drawing, mass thinking, linear drawing, anatomy of light and form and more. Students look at artists throughout history and how they approached painting the portrait. Then students use a majority of the session to paint together. During each session students will work on their portraits, take a photo of their in-process work and email to instructor who will then digitally make corrections over the image to demonstrate changes student can make. Students work at their own pace. Various sized boards needed to work on projects. Techniques and methods discussed include; alla prima painting, closed and open grisaille painting, imprimatura, velatura, verdaccio, glazing, scumbling, zorn palette, limited palette, master-copy, wet-on-wet, direct painting vs. indirect painting, mediums, surfaces, and more.
