Description

"Principles of Uncertainty" is a solo exhibition that includes recent drawings and prints by Caroline Harman of Newtown, Connecticut.

Harman’s deeply multi-layered paintings, drawings, and prints are rhythmic, complex, and organic. In her paintings, Harman builds up layers of polychromatic paint and mylar, frequently adding random disruptors like ink stains, paint pours, sprays and drips to create tension in the carefully-created abstract compositions. A single piece could take as long as a year to evolve to a state of equilibrium.

Harman says of her work, "I try to explore how living organisms, and the complex systems within which they exist, adapt to random events and adverse conditions. An optimist by nature, my earlier work was devoted to the ideal of resiliency and the hope of survival. Lately, however, the paintings and drawings are leading me in a new direction – one that is less ordered and stable, tilting toward a tipping point that feels more imminent with each passing day.”

Older black and white charcoal drawings are included in the exhibition which show a dystopian realm of ladders and levels. These pair well with a series of black and white ink drawings on acetate which hint at current events. The stark contrast in the black and white images enhances an explosive quality of movement, and seems to serve as a warning of the consequences of living in disharmony with nature and each other.
