According to Anne Lamott, “All writer’s write shitty first drafts. That is how they end up good second drafts and terrific third drafts.” In this one week intensive class, we will challenge ourselves to turn our messy manuscripts, our inchoate chapters, and our nascent novels into full, completed (sometimes very) rough drafts. During this focused week we will support, challenge and help guide each other to get across the first draft finish line. The session will begin by sharing our intentions, creating an outline of the material we have already written and sharing that outline with the group. From there we will each brain storm where we feel the story wants to go, needs to go, should go, and create a list of scenes that will get the move the story forward. We will then write in class together for an hour and fifteen minutes, focusing on forward momentum, share a portion of what we’ve written, and hear the groups feedback. Every writer is challenged to write as many pages after class that day as they wrote in class, and we will briefly check in with everyone each day.
If you have a almost finished, half finished, or barely started draft of a book, come challenge yourself to see how far one week of intense, focused work will take you. Because the sooner as you get your rough draft finished, the sooner you’ll be working on your terrific one.
