“Sacred Encounters”, Moses to Jesus: carved in wood and leather by noted local carver, Harvey Paris. All are invited to this pop-up event which will run from May 30 to June 2 at 222 Post Road in Fairfield Ct.
This will be the first opportunity in years for the Connecticut community to once again see the carvings of Harvey Paris. Paris, who is recognized as one of the nation’s premier carvers, uses only a hand held knife to create his works of art.
Wayne Barton, father of chip carving in North America says “Harvey has honed his skills and used his creative imagination to develop his own style of contemporary and unique Jewish carving. Equally exciting is his ability to transfer wood carving skills to leather, and now, to contemporary Christian design as well.
His latest work, “Abraham’s Gift” is a leather book featuring 14 carvings beginning with Creation, going through Adam and Eve, Abraham and Moses and concluding with Jesus and the Resurrection. This work will be displayed as a 14 foot mural. Also included in the show is the Paris Carved Leather Scroll, a 7 foot by 5 foot work highlighting the encounter at the Burning Bush and the Passover Story.
Three large wood carvings will also be displayed. His 2016 carving “I (SAIAH) HAD A DREAM” was called a “tour de force” by Laura Kruger, Curator of the Hebrew Union College Museum in New York City. “Revelation at Sinai” and the “Wisdom of King Solomon” will also be highlighted.
A Meet the Artist Reception will take place on Thursday, May 30 from 7-9 P.M. and there will be on-going carving demonstrations throughout the course of the pop-up. Detailed information is available at @sacredencounters or www.jewishcarving.com.
