WATER – Group Art Show
Seascapes are the most favored of all landscape subjects, and the works in Axel’s upcoming “Water” show feature perennial favorites: Martha’s Vineyard, the Maine coast and Venice. But this show also includes examples of how we interact with water, such as the gouache studies by Lincoln Perry of women bathing in the cascading water near North Conway, New Hampshire known as “Diana’s Baths”. Helen Cantrell’s paintings show water in all of its forms (rain, snow and thaw) and how the weather impacts our perception of the landscape. Brec Morgan has studied water up close; his “Wake” series was inspired by riding the Stromness Ferry in Scotland.
Artist Susan Fehlinger well articulates the appeal of water, saying; “I have been fascinated with the relationship of objects – boats, buildings, rocks—with the water. I love the reflections they create, how they hold their ground against the power of the sea and the constant movement of the water.” Water has the capacity to alternately calm and energize us. Particular scenes can evoke memories, often of childhood or summer, of slower and simpler times.
The Water show truly encompasses “something for everyone” from a tiny watercolor of a Venetian bridge, to a large-scale oil on canvas snow scene that almost reads as an abstraction. Because the paintings are displayed at Axel Interiors alongside furniture, rugs and decorative accessories, one can easily appreciate how the pieces will work in a home setting.
