The Suzuki Music Schools’ Westport school will host WSHU Public Radio’s "The Complete Beethoven Violin Sonata" concert series, starting on Sunday, February 12th at 4:00pm in the Blake Recital Hall (246 Post Road East, Lower Level, Westport CT 06880). Performances will feature award-winning violinist Andrew Smith, director of the Suzuki Music Schools, and Grammy-nominated pianist Joshua Pierce. This series will explore the genius of Beethoven and is one of the few instances in which the entire catalog of sonatas is performed together.
Beethoven is lionized as a composer and artist. His music is treated with a reverence that can sometimes hide the intellect and passion he intended to convey to the audiences of his era. The first nine violin sonatas were written in five years but represented an incredible creative trajectory breaking new boundaries at every step. Abandoning the form, he returned to it almost eight years later to compose his final sonata, the autumnal masterpiece of his mature period.
Performance dates are:
Sunday, February 12 at 4 p.m. — Op.12 “Beethoven’s Arrival in Vienna” Sonata no.1 in D, Sonata no.2 in A, and Sonata no.3 in E flat.
Sunday, March 19 at 4 p.m. — A New Voice: Op.23 and 24.
Sunday, April 16 at 4 p.m. — His Mature Voice: Op.30.
Sunday, May 7 at 4 p.m. — The Masterpieces Op.47 & 96.
Tickets are $35 for a single concert, or $100 for the entire 4-concert series. They can be purchased through the link below.
