New Canaan Library Receives 2026 CT State Library Excellence in Public Libraries Award
New Canaan, Conn., [May 21, 2026] — New Canaan Library has been named one of four recipients of the 2026 CT State Library Excellence in Public Libraries Award, presented by Connecticut State Library.
This award recognizes outstanding public libraries that demonstrate excellence in service, innovative programming, and meaningful community impact. New Canaan Library was awarded this honor in the category of Accessibility and Inclusion, specifically for its comprehensive and evolving programs for neurodiverse children, teens, and adults, as well as educational and support resources for their families and caregivers.
In addition to designing programs with inclusion and accessibility in mind, the Library offers a well-rounded STEAM curriculum with specialized programming for neurodiverse individuals and their families and caregivers. Programs have included adaptive circus programming, adaptive art programs, sensory-friendly concerts, adaptive science programs, Library orientations, parenting workshops, and a growing STEAM curriculum for neurodiverse teens and adults. Current offerings include a biweekly book group, monthly MakerLab classes, and quarterly baking classes. Over the past two years, the Library has presented 141 programs designed for neurodiverse community members, preschool through adult, and their families, caregivers, and educators, serving more than 800 participants from the neurodiverse community. Volunteer and employment opportunities offer another way for neurodiverse teens and adults to fully engage with the Library.
"We are grateful to so many community partners, including the New Canaan Community Foundation, Inclusive Together, the New Canaan Public Schools, and NeuroSpark+, along with numerous parents, caregivers, and local experts, without whom this work would not be possible,” says Rebecca Fox, Manager of Family & Community Engagement. “Above all else, we want this programming to respond to our local community's unique needs. We continue to seek feedback; if there is something that we can do to make the Library and its programs more accessible, we want to know."
“We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the Connecticut State Library and are so proud of our team who are committed to ensuring we provide thoughtful and meaningful programs and services that serve everyone in our community,” says Cheryl Capitani, Library Director.
The New Canaan Libraryhas been the community's intellectual and cultural center for more than a century. Today, the Library continues to be the community’s core resource for learning and innovation, with an emphasis on transformational knowledge, lifelong learning, and connections.

Join Brian on Wednesday, May 20th for the opening of his 'Noah - A Future Hope' exhibition at the Jewish Community Center in Hartford. This tour began in Houston, went to Washington DC and is now in Hartford. In July it moves on the Interchurch Center in NYC. This image is dark, because these are dark times. But there is hope. It all rests on mankind's will.

Our world is experiencing a climate catastrophe with far-reaching consequences. Planet earth is at a tipping point, and people across the globe need to unite and proactively participate in ensuring a sustainable future for the earth and all its life forms.
In the midst of the challenges of climate change, the epic story of Noah, one of the most well-known flood stories in history, has much to teach us. This quintessential tale is deeply embedded in the faith traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam who see Noah as a spiritual figure who serves as a reminder of humanity’s role as a protector, steward and caretaker of creation.
Through seven lessons drawn from the story of Noah, this timely exhibition titled NOAH: A Future Hope features three premier contemporary artists from the faith traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam whose artistic practices uniquely blend their spiritual, cultural and creative expression - Yona Verwer, Brian Whelan and Hady Boraey. Each artist has created eight paintings that serve to visually inspire our imaginations to heal our world by honoring our intricate connection to the earth as our sustainer, and by maintaining a sacred balance with all of life that is upon it.
What can the Noah flood narrative teach us about how we should live towards preserving the earth both for ourselves and future generations? That is the question this poignant exhibition attempts to answer.
This event is sponsored by the Duncan Black Macdonald Center & The Center for Transformative Spirituality at Hartford International University for Religion and Peace, and the John P. Webster Library.
Wilton Artist Brian Whelan Exhibiting at Schelfhaudt Gallery, University of Bridgeport

Brian Whelan joins others in showing his work at the Immigrant Song exhibition at Schelfhaudt Gallery until May 17th 2026.
Leaving one’s homeland and giving up one’s cultural and family ties to become a stranger in a strange land is daunting and not for the weak-hearted. Per curator Peter Schelfhaudt, “This exhibition seeks to depict the immigrant experience here in the US and to celebrate our brothers, sisters, and neighbors who made this country their home. As Olivia Dean reminded us recently ‘We’re nothing without each other.’” Brian is an Irish citizen, so this theme is personal.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Connecticut (MoCACT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Robin Jaffee Frank, PhD, as its next Executive Director. A highly respected senior museum leader and cultural visionary, Dr. Frank brings decades of museum, academic, and public-engagement experience to MoCACT at a pivotal moment in the institution’s evolution. She began her tenure on January 1, 2026.
Dr. Frank’s appointment ushers in a new chapter of strategic focus, creative momentum, and bold artistic ambition. Building on the dedication of the MoCACT Board and team, she will guide the Museum into its next phase with a focus on curatorial excellence, operational strength, greater visibility, and deeper community engagement.
“This is an exciting moment for MoCACT,” said Board of Directors President Jodi Felton. “Robin is an innovative leader whose strategic expertise will position the Museum for long-term success. Her arrival marks the start of a vibrant new era for the institution and the communities we serve.”
A familiar presence at MoCACT through her service on the Visual Arts Advisory Committee, Dr. Frank brings an exceptional record of leadership at major cultural institutions. She previously served as Chief Curator and Kriebel Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, and earlier as a curator at the Yale University Art Gallery, where she led dynamic exhibitions, managed large curatorial teams, and collaborated closely with educators, designers, conservators, and librarians.
Her acclaimed exhibition and award-winning book Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861–2008 exemplify her ability to create ambitious, multidisciplinary projects that engage wide audiences. The exhibition traveled nationally, earned significant press attention, increased attendance and membership at the Wadsworth Atheneum, and garnered exceptional grant support—including special designations from the National Endowment for the Humanities for its commitment to inclusion, diversity, and public engagement.
Dr. Frank has also served as a grant reviewer for the Terra Foundation for American Art, taught at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, curated exhibitions and guided programs for the New York Historical Society and Silvermine Arts Center, and organized exhibitions at museums throughout the US, lectured extensively, and published widely on American visual culture and its intersections with contemporary issues.
“MoCACT is at a pivotal transitional moment, and I am honored to help shape its future,” said Dr. Frank. “The Museum has extraordinary potential—to spark dialogue, expand access to the arts, and bring people together. I look forward to collaborating with the Board, Advisory Committees, my new colleagues, and especially the community to build a vibrant, innovative, and sustainable future for this remarkable institution. In this role, I will chart a strategic path forward that prioritizes curatorial and operational excellence, a healthy revenue mix, and a marketing and communications strategy to raise the Museum’s profile and increase attendance.”
The Board is deeply grateful to MoCACT Board MemberPamela Hovland, who served as Acting Executive Director with dedication during a critical period and helped stabilize, support, and lead the Museum during the search process. She will continue to serve on the Board, chair the Visual Arts Advisory Committee, and direct the Museum’s visual brand identity.
With Dr. Frank’s appointment, MoCACT enters 2026 with renewed confidence, momentum, and a clear vision for its future. If you would like more information or an interview with Dr. Frank, please contact Sandra Nygaard.
