We say it all the time… ‘Arts and Culture’ is vital to the creation of healthy, vibrant, thriving communities. The Arts connect people, activate and energize places and spaces, enhance well-being, and so much more. Now you can read about how CAFC members are impacting their communities in Coastal Fairfield County.

For the past 83 years, The Norwalk Symphony has been an important cultural organization, showcasing professional musicians from the wider community, and enhancing the quality of life in Fairfield County. Audiences praise their artistic standards of excellence as “New York quality.”

The Symphony is a role model for collaboration and connectivity. In addition to six regular season performances, the Symphony serves as the live orchestra for New England Academy of Dance’s annual performances of The Nutcracker.  An outdoor summer Pops performance at Waveny Park in New Canaan in 2022 has set the stage for an annual event. Partnerships with local dance companies, New Paradigm Theatre, and many other regional nonprofits all enhance the musical experience of the audience as they collaborate on themes to deepen the connections between music and everyday life. They bring small ensembles into the community for local arts and cultural festivals, holiday music at the SoNo Collection and as featured performances for other community groups

In addition to collaboration, music education is an important part of the Symphony’s mission with programs like (Not) Just for Kids, the Master Class Program, and the Young Artists Concerto Competition. They provide opportunities for Norwalk Youth Symphony members and students from other musical programs to play side-by-side with adult Symphony musicians. The relationships that have developed between students and mentors are invaluable and they have fostered future talent over the years.

The Norwalk Symphony’s performances span a wide range of orchestral repertoire, from traditional symphonic music to Broadway, American music, jazz, opera, major choral works and new composer’s contemporary pieces. The Norwalk Concert Hall, the Symphony’s performance home, has world-class acoustics that provide an inspiring live music experience.

It is clear that The Symphony’s inspiration spans far beyond music and entertainment. Their collaborative, generous spirit lives on in the youth that they mentor, the organizations that they partner with, and the community that they serve. Their work in Fairfield County has helped to uplift a future generation, build bridges across sectors, and offer meaningful opportunities for scores of residents over the years.
