The Westport School of Music (WSM) is pleased to announce its recent relocation (as of October 2020) to an exciting new space in the building which also houses MoCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) Westport.
As one of the oldest continuing nonprofit music schools in Connecticut. WSM was founded in 1938 and is a member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education. The School's mission is to provide quality music instruction for children and adults ages five and above regardless of race, ability, income, gender or ethnic origin. With the onset of the Covid-19 health crisis, WSM instructors seamlessly moved to online instruction in spring of 2020 and now offer EITHER in-person instruction (following all CDC guidelines) or virtual instruction.
Post-Covid, WSM will once again offer students several performance opportunities and community outreach events. Students may share their musical gifts with residents of nursing, health care and assisted living facilities twice each year. They learn to play in chamber ensembles in preparation for the Student Chamber Music Concert held onstage at the Pequot Library, and they may participate in special world music workshops and annual recitals.
For over twenty years, WSM has also offered a Saturday morning program for students with special needs. Facilitated by a board-certified music therapist, MusicWorks! offers individual sessions for children and adults who may have developmental delays, autism, processing challenges or other physical and/or mental disabilities. Sessions involve singing, instrument playing, movement and relaxation techniques to meet cognitive, emotional, physical and social concerns.
WSM faculty are all professional musicians and teachers; several have advanced degrees from some of the most prestigious conservatories and university music schools in the country. Westport School of Music is committed to providing student-centered learning for both children and adults throughout Fairfield County.
