Jane Davila is a fiber and mixed-media artist who began her professional art career as a printmaker, specializing in etchings and intaglios. Her prints can be found in many private and corporate collections around the world, including the Lila Acheson Wallace Collection. She switched to fiber, mixed media, and art quilting in the 1990s but still incorporates many printmaking techniques, such as screen printing, block printing, gyotaku, and thermofax printing, in her work. The experience of living in Peru has had a lasting impact on her appreciation for the diversity of cultural expression and iconography, which as a theme frequently shows up in her work. Repeating motifs of fish, birds, and insects reflect her ongoing fascination with nature, the environment, and human impact on both. Much of her work uses allegory to reveal social and cultural issues.
She teaches art quilting and surface design workshops extensively across the US as well as internationally, including in South Korea, Canada, and Australia. Jane also teaches online and at her Bridgeport CT studio.
Jane has appeared numerous times on Quilting Arts TV, shown on PBS stations nationwide. She writes about a variety of art quilting, surface design, and mixed media topics for national craft magazines. Jane is the co-author of the best selling books Art Quilt Workbook and Art Quilts at Play as well as Jane Davila's Surface Design Essentials, all for CT Publishing. For four years she wrote an acclaimed regular column for Quilting Arts magazine, “Minding Your Business”, on the business side of being an artist, sharing her knowledge of promotion, marketing, social media, web design, working with galleries, pricing and selling art, and much more. She was the editor of several digital and print magazines for F+W Media and Interweave Press.
Jane has led two art mentorship groups with a total membership of over 60 artists for the past 12 years. She is energized by helping other artists promote themselves, find venues for their work, and manage their careers. Jane works from a studio at the NEST Arts Factory, where she is the Managing Director.
